Terracotta
Roman,2nd century AD
H. 13.4cm; W. 12.5cm
The mask is mould-made with subtly rendered features. The oval eyes are wide ope, with pierced round pupils. The smooth full cheeks, slightly open mouth, narrow nose with the straight bridge, and prominent chin give the mask an expressive character. The entire surface is covered with a white engobe, an undercoating for the more colourful painting that would have been applied on top. Traces of this polychrome – pink and gray for the eyes and eyebrows – are preserved. Masks such as this were used both in Roman ceremonial rites, as well as celebrations and theatre performances. A must have for theatre lovers.
Condition: Section above the eyebrows and along the hairline as well as the left half of the face missing.
Provenance: Formerly collection of Ambassador G.P., Nr. 159, before 1965
Item reference: CL0766
