An impressive, monumental Roman capital of Corinthian type decorated with crisp acanthus leaves and scrolls. The Corinthian order originated ca. 400 B.C. – the most ornate of the Classical orders, Pliny relates its origin to a sacral basket overgrown with the hardy acanthus plant. Robust yet decorative and the ideal piece to convert into a dining-, coffee- or side table.
Condition: Slight abrasions and small losses; as is usual on larger pieces of antiquity. Overall condition very good.
Provenance: Formerly with Galerie Nefer, Zurich, old stock item (80’s/90’s) registered in an inventory list of the notary’s office, Zurich.
